Drowsy-Driving Accident Victims Face Major Damages

Home » Drowsy-Driving Accident Victims Face Major Damages

Sleep deprivation has risen to epidemic levels in the U.S., according to the Centers of Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), with millions of men and women getting less than the recommended seven to eight hours of sleep per night. Researchers agree getting less than an optimum amount of sleep can result in significant issues during the day, including problems concentrating and memorizing as well as slowed reaction time – all of which play critical roles in safe, accident-free driving.

Proving Your Case in Kennesaw and Acworth

It’s no surprise, then, that as the problem of sleep deprivation has grown, the number of “drowsy-driving” car accidents has also risen. In fact, the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) says accidents involving sleepy drivers cause at least 1,550 deaths and 71,000 injuries each year in the U.S. – numbers it admits are most likely very conservative. The Virginia Tech Transportation Institute pegs that number considerably higher. In a recent study, they found as much as 20 percent of accidents and 16 percent of near-accidents were caused by drowsy drivers. The study also found drowsy-driving accidents were more likely to happen during the day rather than at night as had been assumed.

Drowsy Driving Causes Millions in Damages

Perhaps even more alarming, in a survey from the National Sleep Foundation, 60 percent of adult drivers – about 168 million people – reported driving while drowsy, and 37 percent said they had fallen asleep while behind the wheel. About 11 million survey respondents reported they’d had an accident or near-accident because of their drowsiness. The survey also found those who drive while fatigued tend to drive more quickly and feel more stressed and impatient while driving. Only about a fifth said they pulled over to nap when feeling sleepy.

Drowsy-driving accidents cause millions of dollars in personal injuries every year in the Georgia and throughout the U.S. Sleepy drivers are more inattentive, which means they’re more likely to speed through intersections, jump medians, weave across lanes or even drive the wrong way on busy highways. No matter how safely you drive, the erratic behavior of a sleepy driver is just too difficult to predict and avoid. And once an accident occurs, you could find yourself with a pile of medical bills, loss of wages, pain and suffering and other damages that only compound your injuries and worries.
