If you were involved in an accident, it is always important to report the accident to the police. The accident report creates an official record of the accident that can be used to help your case. If you have been injured as a result of another driver’s recklessness or negligence, you should discuss your case with a  car accident attorney at the Law Offices of Roger Ghai, P.C. for assistance.

Car Accidents Investigated By Georgia State Patrol

If you were in a car accident and the Georgia State Patrol responded to your accident, you can obtain a copy of the accident report by contacting your local State Patrol Post or the Open Records Unit. The State Patrol asks that you fill out DPS-536 Accident Report Release Form. The information needed to complete the form is your name and the accident report number.

Other car accident reports are available on buycrash.com. The Georgia Department of Transportation has a contract with a website called buycrash.com. Buycrash.com manages and provides accidents reports, for a fee, on behalf of the state. Buycrash generally has reports available within 7-10 business days of the date of the accident. Reports are sent electronically to the requester, though a mail option is also available. To obtain your accident report, you will need the accident report number. If you do not have the accident report number, contact the law enforcement department that investigated the accident.

Other Ways To Get An Accident Report

Individuals looking for their accident report can also check with agency that investigated. Below is the information for the cities of Marietta, Kennesaw, and Acworth.

  • Marietta – Accident reports maintained by the Marietta Police Department can be requested in person at the police department or by mailing a request to the department.
  • Kennesaw – Accident reports can be requested by the Records Unit at the Kennesaw Police Department.
  • Acworth – Accident reports are available upon request to the Records department of the Acworth Police Department.

Importance Of An Accident Report To Your Claim

Accident reports are key piece of evidence in a personal injury case. An accident report serves as an official record of what happened and includes pertinent information such as the other driver’s insurance information, witness statements, the date, time, location of your accident, and comments by the responding officer that describe what happened. Regardless of the severity of the accident and your injuries, you should always call the police to report the accident. The information in the accident report can be used to help prove who or what caused the accident and to help you recover monetary compensation. Importantly, accident reports are not always correct. If you receive an accident report and believe that some of the information it contains is false, your attorney can help set the record straight.
