Today I’m going to talk a little bit about traumatic brain injuries in car accidents. Traumatic brain injuries are actually a quite common effect from car accidents and unfortunately, they can have very serious implications healthwise for the person who’s been hurt. In fact, those types of injuries can affect your emotional well-being, they can also affect your cognitive ability, that is your ability to think and reason. And of course, these types of injuries can oftentime have serious implications or effects also on your family members.
What can cause a brain injury?
There are numerous ways in which traumatic brain injuries can occur. Sometimes the injury is very obvious, such as a bump to the head or a sore spot on the head, but these injuries are not always so obvious.
Can I have a brain injury and not show signs of bruising?
Sometimes the traumatic brain injury is not so obvious. There may be no bruise, there may be no sore spot or anything like that. Sometimes these injuries occur more of a whiplash type of an injury. What I mean by that is this, at the time of impact your head goes forward really quickly, it comes back really quickly and what happens during that time is that the brain itself goes forward and it hits the inside of the skull. That’s how the non-visible traumatic brain injury can occur.
What are some symptoms of brain injury?
There are several symptoms of traumatic brain injuries. Headaches, dizziness, fainting, balance issues, unusual fatigue or sleepiness, vision problems, loss of taste or smell, memory loss or memory problems, difficulty thinking, processing information or concentrating, slow or slurred speech, seizures, increased anxiety, irritability, agitation or impulsiveness as well as mood disorders including depression.
