Construction zone traffic accidents are a serious concern in the state of Georgia. In Georgia, there were approximately 6,100 accidents last year, however, almost one third of those accidents involved an area where there was construction going on. Construction zone accidents are likely to increase, given the fact that there are substantial increase in the number of highways being worked on and roadways being worked on.
There are several causes to work zone traffic accidents. Causes of those construction zone accidents include the construction equipment entering or exiting the traffic zone thereby creating a moving hazard as well as dangerous blind spots. Another problem is that sometimes workers in the nearby traffic zone, and this includes flagmen or other workers, they may not be paying attention or they may move suddenly into a narrow roadway, which causes drivers to swerve into neighboring vehicles.
Another issue can be too that the lanes are just too narrow, and they are obstructed by barrels of cones or even dangerous concrete barriers, which results in a far less room to swerve or maneuver in order to avoid accidents. Many times, the lack of lane lines and other markers can become completely obliterated by the resurfacing or other work that is being done in the area.
Finally, debris often times is found in or very near to the traffic zone, as well as debris that blows or it drifts into the traffic lanes, which results in drivers having to swerve or take other evasive action that can cause accidents.
