Let’s talk today about large vehicle rollover rates. There are certain benefits to driving a large vehicle. One of the benefits, in fact, is that in a multi-car or multi-vehicle collision, the injuries are usually for the passengers and the driver of a large utility vehicle much less, than less significantly hurt than if they were on a smaller vehicle. The downside to driving a large utility vehicle is that, if it’s involved in a single-vehicle wreck there’s more likelihood of a fatality actually occurring than if it were of a different type of a smaller vehicle. These vehicles is large vehicles roll over in about 3% of all the accidents.
Now, what’s important about that is that even though they roll over in about 3% of the accidents, the fatalities actually equal about 30% of all fatalities of motor vehicles. The problem with the large utility vehicles is number one that, there are a lot higher up off the ground. Number two is that the wheelbase is much narrower. It becomes more difficult to navigate those types of vehicles, especially going around a curve or up a hill or something like that. That’s oftentimes when they do roll over.
Like I said, these vehicles, in particular, are very susceptible to rolling over. It could be that they’ve hit a soft patch in the road. It could be that they’ve just barely ventured off the side of the road. It could be that they’ve hit a curb. It could be that they’ve hit a pothole and the vehicle has just rolled over.
