Let’s talk today a little bit about truckers on the highway who follow your vehicle too closely. First of all, what they’re supposed to do is that they’re supposed to maintain a space of six seconds between themselves and your vehicle if they’re traveling at 55 miles per hour. If the truck driver’s truck is 60 feet or less then the rule is that there should be six seconds of space between the truck driver’s vehicle and your vehicle.
In order for the trucker to determine how much space they actually need between their vehicle and your vehicle, they’re supposed to use certain markings along the side of the road and count 1,001, 1,002, 1,003, etcetera, to determine how much space they need to maintain between their vehicle and your vehicle. Of course, if the trucker’s truck is 40 feet in length and he’s only able to count to 1,001, 1,002, then of course, the trucker is traveling too closely for the size of that vehicle.
Of course, if the driver is driving in slippery conditions then those rules do not apply. If you have questions about whether the trucker was following you too closely, especially too closely and too fast for the particular conditions, please call me at 770-792-1000 so we can discuss.
