What to Do After Car Accident Caused By Self-Driving Car

Hi, I’m Roger Ghai and I wanted to talk today a little bit about the self-driving vehicles and how that’s going to impact motor vehicle accidents in this era, this new era that we’re running into now. The only major company that really has come out with a self-driving vehicle, I think it’s going to be the first self-driving vehicle on the road, and I could be wrong on this, but I think that’s the Tesla vehicle. Anyway, it’s an important development in technology nowadays because it’s going to save a lot of lives.
In 2015, for example, 38,000 lives were lost to human error. It was either by drunk drivers, pedestrians who were where they shouldn’t have been, or just plain negligence on the part of the driver. In addition to that, there were four million accidents in 2015. Now, if we compare those statistics to the commercial airplanes which our self-automated and self-flown nowadays, in 2015, there were zero fatalities from commercial airline accidents. There were, however, 136 fatalities from civil aviation accidents in 2015.
Let’s look at this, if there’s just a 1% improvement in the number of accidents that happen per year, that’s going to save 400 lives and that’s also going to save about 400 accidents per year and that’s just on a one percentage basis. Currently, as far as determining who is at fault in a motor vehicle accident, we have to rely on the police report, we have to rely on the testimony of the parties involved, and we have to rely on the physical damage to the vehicles.
That all changes when we’re dealing with self-driving motor vehicles because there’s going to be onboard technology that can tell us exactly how fast the vehicle was traveling, how much of a skid distance there was, and a multitude of other factors. It’s going to take certain things out of the equation as to determine who is really at fault for the accident.
