The manufacturers of Xarelto are being sued because it is alleged that they’re making or have made, I should say, false representations about the safety of Xarelto. They claimed, at least initially, when it was first brought out to the market that it was safer than Coumadin which is also an anticoagulant, but what happened actually was that the studies have shown that the folks taking Xarelto maybe is two times of a higher risk of serious side effects such as bleeding or death or something of that nature versus taking Coumadin.
Can the side effects of Xarelto be reversed?
There is no known antidote that doctors can prescribe once the uncontrollable bleeding stops. This is not like Coumadin. Coumadin, at least there’s an antidote and that is vitamin K.
Xarelto vs. Couamadin. Which is safer?
Xarelto is actually less safe, at least according to the initial studies and it’s more costly. In fact, Coumadin costs about $200 per year and at least there’s an antidote to that medication in case bleeding does ensue. However, with Xarelto, the costs annually is approximately $3,000 and there is no antidote that doctors can prescribe for uncontrollable bleeding.
