There have been a number of lawsuits filed against the Bayer Corporation as well as Janssen Pharmaceuticals because they manufactured and it is alleged that they manufactured negligently the drug Xarelto. In fact, as of the making of this video, there are approximately 500 lawsuits that have been filed national wide as of June 2015.
The manufacturers of Xarelto are being sued because it is alleged they are making or have made, I should, say false representations about the safety of Xarelto. They claimed, at least initially when it was a fresh product to the market, that it was safer than Coumadin, which is also an anti-coagulant. But what happened actually was the studies have shown that the folks taking Xarelto may be as high as two times of a higher risk of serious side effects such as bleeding, of death, or something of that nature versus taking Coumadin.
There is no known antidote the doctors can prescribe once the uncontrollable bleeding stops. This is not like Coumadin. Coumadin, at least, there’s an antidote, and that is vitamin K.
Although it was recommended and thought to be safer than Coumadin, Xarelto is actually less safe, at least according to the initial studies, and it’s more costly. In fact, Coumadin costs about $200 per year and, at least, there’s an antidote to that medication in case bleeding does ensue. However, with Xarelto, the cost annually is approximately $3000, and there is no antidote the doctors can prescribe for uncontrollable bleeding.
